The Maxwell district in southern Bridgetown is considered the most luxurious beach destination in southern Barbados. The beautiful local beaches of Maxwell and Dover are surrounded by photogenic coconut palms, luxury resorts and expensive restaurants.

The streets and sidewalks are noticeably tidier and you'll also find better supermarkets and restaurants.
Access to the beaches
The local beaches offer the best of Barbados. Fine white sand, comfortable and safe access to the water and tropical scenery with coconut palms.
At both Maxwell and Dover Beach, you'll find sunbed and umbrella rentals as well as more expensive bars and beach restaurants. The only downside to the local beaches is that they tend to have bigger waves and therefore not as good snorkelling conditions. However, the waves are rarely so big as to be dangerous.
Although Maxwell Beach in particular is literally surrounded by luxury resorts, beach access is free for all.
Accommodation in Maxwell
The beaches around Maxwell accommodate travelers who like order, well-kept streets and ample facilities. Although you will find the most expensive Babrados resorts here, you can still stay in Maxwell for under 130 usd per night for 2 in cheaper apartments or hotels.
Among the cheapest are the title hotels:
- Meridian Inn ** right on the beach
- Melbourne Inn *** in a quiet location 200 metres from the beach
On the other hand, the most expensive and the best hotels can be found under the names Sandals Barbados ***** or White Sands Beach Condos ****.
Transport to the beaches
A road marked Highway 7 runs along the coastline within 150 metres of the beaches.
Transport is therefore preferable by bus or the much busier ZRs, i.e. shared taxis with a precise route. These run from Bridgetown (Constitution River Terminal) all along the south coast to Oistins, some (the 3D line) continue to the airport. Frequency of service is approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
Small vans are supplemented 1-2 times per hour by a conventional large bus, which terminates in Bridgetown at Fairchild Street Station.
Detailed information on getting around the island is given in the chapter Transport in Barbados.
