Animal Flower Cave is a private tourist attraction run by the owners of the restaurant of the same name, which is located at the northernmost point of the island of Barbados. The dramatic and completely bare coastline here is impressive, with its steep and jagged cliffs that were underwater coral reefs long ago.

Near the restaurant, a huge cave at sea level is accessed by a sweeping staircase, with natural pools that fill with the surge of the sea waves.

Entering the cave and swimming

The cave is accessible by a short and very narrow staircase through the rock. You will discover a wide cave closed on three sides with very rugged walls. The fourth side offers a breathtaking view of the ocean and crashing waves.

You can safely swim in the several pools, just prepare your swimsuit and towel before entering the cave, as there is not much space inside the cave.

The pools are very shallow, so expect a short soak rather than a real swim.

  • Opening hours - 9:30 - 16:00 Tuesday to Sunday (always closed on Mondays), if there are big waves, it always stays closed

Walk the Reefs

Perhaps even more impressive than the cave itself is the jagged cliff walk, which is free to take, but the starting point of the paths along the cliffs is behind the fenced area, so opening hours are the same as the cave.

Eat your fill with a divine view

The restaurant Animal Flower Cave offers seating right above the open reef and is one of the most popular dining establishments in Barbados.

If you're heading here for lunch, we recommend booking a table on the restaurant's website.

How to get there?

The easiest way to get there is by car, which can be driven along the tarmac road right up to the caves and parked in the free car park. The turn-offs to Animal Flower Cave are signposted, but expect to drive the last few kilometres on narrow country roads, all of which are tarmac.

Car rental - Barbados

There are no buses or ZRs (vans) going directly to the cave. The nearest bus stop is at this point about 850 metres from the cave. The 1C bus via Speighstown to Bridgetown passes through here once every half hour, as well as minibus routes 9A and 90 at irregular intervals.
