Basilica of Ta' Pinu

Basilica of Ta'Pinu

One of the most visited sights on Gozo is undoubtedly the Ta' Pinu Basilica.

The building itself may not be one of the largest shrines in Europe, but it stands out very prominently in the open undeveloped landscape of the hilly centre of the island.

The basilica, which is now a major pilgrimage site, was built in the 1930s on the site of what was originally a smaller chapel. It was here that Karmni Grima, a resident of the nearby village of Għarb, is said to have spoken to the Virgin Mary, to whom this magnificent structure is dedicated, in the late 19th century.

The bell tower of the basilica reaches a height of 61 metres.

The beauty of the church is enhanced by the area in front of the main entrance with its decorated ground and magnificent mosaic walls.

If you're not in a hurry, after the tour of the basilica, take the Stations of the Cross, which starts just opposite the basilica. Half an hour later, you'll find yourself on a hill, where you'll get a beautiful view of this monumental basilica.

Entrance fees and opening hours

For tourists, the church is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00-18:00 and on Sundays and public holidays from 7:30-17:00.

During Mass, the basilica is only open to the faithful. Masses are held at the following times:

  • Monday through Saturday - 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 6:30 p.m.
  • Sundays and holidays - 6:15 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 5:00 p.m.

Admission to the Basilica is free.

How to get there

Ta' Pinu stands in the countryside near the town of Gharb about 3.5 km from Victoria. A road runs alongside the church.

There is a free car park directly opposite the basilica, which tends to be full especially at the time of Sunday Mass.

You can also use the bus stop at the church for bus line 308, which runs once an hour from Victoria.

The "Gozo Sightseeing" tourist buses on the purple line also go to Ta' Pinu Basilica. They run once every 45 minutes in the summer season and once an hour in the winter. A day ticket for both tourist bus routes costs 20 eur. However, the ticket is not valid for public buses. Timetable and other information: city-sightseeing.com//gozo.
